Diving the Blue Holes of Andros

Quick clarification: Dean's Blue Hole, the famous freediving site, is on Long Island, not Andros. Andros has something arguably more remarkable — the world's highest concentration of blue holes, both inland (in the pine forest) and offshore (along the barrier reef).

What a blue hole actually is

A vertical cave system, formed during Ice Age low sea levels when rainwater dissolved channels through the limestone bedrock. When the seas rose, the caves flooded. Inland blue holes are freshwater on top, saltwater below, separated by a sharp halocline that looks like cling film. Offshore blue holes are saltwater throughout.

Andros sits on the edge of the Tongue of the Ocean, a 6,000-foot trench. The geology is genuinely unique.

The famous ones

• Stargate Blue Hole (South Andros, inland) — a classic technical cave dive with stunning halocline.
• Captain Bill's Blue Hole (Central Andros, inland) — accessible from a roadside; popular for freediving.
• Guardian Blue Hole — deep, dark, and offshore on the barrier reef wall.

Who can dive them

• Snorkelers and freedivers — Captain Bill's and a few other inland holes are open-water and surface-accessible.
• Open-water scuba divers — the offshore "ocean blue holes" along the barrier reef are within recreational limits at most sites.
• Cave divers — the inland cave systems require full cavern/cave certification. Do not enter overhead environments without it. People die in these caves regularly.

• Small Hope Bay Lodge (Central Andros) — the original Andros dive operation, running blue hole and wall trips since 1960.
• Kamalame Cay — luxury side, also operates dives.
• For technical / cave diving, arrange in advance with operators who specifically permit cave work — most Bahamas shops do not.

What makes the diving special

The Andros Barrier Reef is the third-largest in the world. Within a single boat ride you can hit a shallow coral garden, a 6,000-foot wall, and a blue hole punched into the reef shelf. Visibility is regularly 100+ feet. Pelagics — eagle rays, reef sharks, the occasional hammerhead — pass through.

The science angle

Blue holes are time capsules. The anoxic bottom layers preserve fossilized crocodile bones, Lucayan remains, and stromatolite layers dating back tens of thousands of years. The Bahamas Caves Research Foundation has been mapping them for decades; some are still uncharted.

Practical

• Best months: April–June (calm water, warm temps).
• Bring your C-card and current dive insurance. Andros operators check.
• Charter to Andros from Nassau is short and cheap (~$80 one-way on Western Air).

The Out Islands are full of pretty reefs. Andros is full of holes.
