The Best Beaches Within 30 Minutes of Downtown

You don't need to leave New Providence to find a great beach. You just need to know which one to pick for the day you're having.

Cable Beach — for facilities

Drive time: 15 min west. Vibe: resort strip. Sand: soft, wide, raked.

If you want a lounger, a frozen drink, and a bathroom, this is the answer. The strip runs four miles past Baha Mar and Sandyport. Day passes at the resorts run $50–150; the public access points (near Goodman's Bay) are free.

Love Beach — for snorkeling

Drive time: 25 min west. Vibe: quiet residential. Sand: narrow, coarse.

Past Gambier Village, Love Beach has the best easy-access reef on the island — a protected marine reserve about 200 yards offshore. Bring your own gear. No facilities, no shade, no crowd.

Jaws Beach — for solitude

Drive time: 30 min southwest, in Clifton Heritage Park. Vibe: wild. Sand: white, fine.

Named for the 1987 Jaws: The Revenge shoot, this is a long crescent inside a national park. Bring water and sunscreen. There are a couple of picnic shelters and that's it. Best in the morning before the breeze picks up.

Saunders Beach — for locals

Drive time: 10 min west. Vibe: community park. Sand: soft.

Right on West Bay Street, this is where Nassau actually goes on Sundays. Picnic tables, shade trees, vendors selling conch salad off the back of a truck. Crowded after church, empty by 5 p.m.

Junkanoo Beach — for convenience

Drive time: walking distance from downtown. Vibe: cruise-ship overflow. Sand: decent.

Five minutes from the cruise terminal, lined with beach bars. It's not anyone's favorite beach, but it's the one you can reach without a car. Drinks are overpriced; the people-watching is excellent.

1. Love Beach if you snorkel.
2. Jaws Beach if you want quiet.
3. Saunders Beach if you want to feel like a local.
4. Cable Beach if you want a lounger.
5. Junkanoo Beach only if you have one hour off a ship.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash for the conch truck, and leave nothing behind.
